Exemption Criteria (English Language Requirements)

Students with valid documents showing their language level (see Table 1) can be exempted from the English Preparatory Program. However, students who have no documents regarding their language level are required to take the EMU FLEPS English Proficiency Exam Stage I. If students are placed at the highest level in this exam, they are required to sit the EMU FLEPS English Proficiency Exam Stage II.

Students who have successfully completed the English Preparatory Program at another university within last two years and students who are exempted from English Preparatory Program in another institution with an exemption document (the validity of the document is evaluated by the FLEPS Administration) are offered two choices:

  1. Take ENGL181-182 courses, or
  2. Take the EMU FLEPS English Proficiency Exam Stage II. If the student receives a score of minimum 60%, s/he is enrolled on ENGL191-192 courses. If not, the students will have to take ENGL181-182 courses.

Students whose departments require minimum 60% in the EMU FLEPS English Proficiency Test Stage II can enroll on ENGL191-192 courses if they score minimum 60%.

Since Foreign Languages Education Department (FLE) program does not entail ENGL181-182 and ENGL191-192 courses, these courses are not applicable to FLE students. They need to get minimum 60% in order to be exempted from English Preparatory Programs. Students who score 50-59% are subject to be interviewed at FLE Department and upon being successful, they are eligible to start their education in the FLE Department.

The exemption for the following three departments is minimum 60% on the EMU FLEPS English Proficiency Exam Stage II:

  • Department of Psychology
  • Department of Translation and Interpretation
  • Department of Foreign Language Education

The exemption for the following three faculties is minimum 70% on the EMU FLEPS English Proficiency Exam Stage II:

  • Faculty of Medicine
  • Faculty of Pharmacy
  • Faculty of Dentistry

Students who score 60-69% are subject to be interviewed at EPS and upon being successful, they are eligible to start their education in their departments.
